welcome to bakkhus

Welcome to Bakkhus Taverna Greek Restaurant & Bar. In classical mythology, Dyonysus, The son of Zeus, is the Greek God of Wine, The Inspirer of ritual madness, and Revelry. He was a major figure of Greek Mythology. Also known as Bacchus, he was a liberator, freeing one from one's normal self by madness, ecstacy, or wine and bringing an end to care and worry. A "Taverna" refers to a small restaurant serving Greek cuisine, not to be confused with "Tavern." As Greeks have migrated elsewhere, Tavernas have spread throughout the world. The Taverna is an integral part of Greek culture.

about

Bakkhus Taverna Greek Restaurant & Bar located at 605 6th Street, is the brainchild of Demetrios Kouloumoundras and is nothing short of a full family collaboration- quite literally from floor to ceiling.

Demetrios' father Nikolaos, a native of the Greek island of Chios, is his business partner. "My family owns and operates two custom remodeling companies (Nick's Carpentry & Painting and Space City Remodeling). Naturally, we built basically everything in the place from floor up.

It was a huge job, but we were up for the challenge. It's been a total family effort. Without the whole family involved, Bakkhus wouldn't have turned out the quaint cozy place that it is."

Hailing from a small-town in Mississippi, Elisabeth (Demetrios' mother) converted to Greek Orthodox when she married Nikolaos, and enjoyed mastering the art of Greek cooking using recipes passed down from her husband's family. "Growing up my friends would always crash dinner because they loved her food so much, " Demetrios boasted. The restaurants' recipes were a team effort. Elisabeth and close family friend Maria Zagorianos put their heads together and shared family recipes. "With their know-how and Chef Figueroa's extensive skills, we were able to take the Greek family- cooked meal to a commercial level"

The goal at Bakkhus is to offer a menu diverse in traditional and modern greek cuisine. "We're not affraid of trying new things, and I think that's very important. Nothing is set in stone when it comes to cooking, and we're all about putting new twists on items that we have on our menu and that's why we're 'NOT YOUR ORDINARY GREEK RESTAURANT.'
